Blue Moon Films Office: A Harmonious Blend of Old and New

Shu Cui, a renowned designer, found inspiration in the overlooked old buildings amidst China's rapid urbanization. He saw potential in the dilapidated structures and decided to slow down and reevaluate what contributes to the rebirth of buildings. His vision led to the creation of the office design for Blue Moon Films, a project that beautifully juxtaposes old and new.

The design's unique properties lie in its preservation of the original structure while introducing modern elements. Cui highlighted the relationship between indoor space and outdoor courtyards, maximizing space usage through a finely cut single-sided connection. The design integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a harmonious environment that returns the space to its original nature.

Technical specifications of the design reveal a thoughtful approach. An area in orange, representing the film team's passion, contrasts with the old building's remnants. The original stairs were removed and replaced with a glass box corridor, connecting the rest area and main bedroom. This contrast between old and new naturally creates a unique beauty.

Despite the challenges posed by the building's outdated interior space, Cui's innovative solutions triumphed. He connected all rooms, removed removable walls, and transformed windowsills into exits. This approach resulted in a visually expansive and accessible space, devoid of unnecessary design elements. The design also caters to the company's needs, providing private spaces for directors to ruminate and create.

The project, designed in 2015 and built in April 2016, is located in the 8th mansion, Yujin Garden, Tongzhou District, Beijing, China. It was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
